South Africa is to become the fourth country for Nissan’s ongoing campaign to launch or return the Datsun brand to selected countries.

While the Renault-Nissan Alliance has a manufacturing plant in Rosslyn, the first Datsun cars will be sourced from Oragadam (Chennai) – like India, South Africa is a right-hand drive market. Datsun will be launched with just one model, the Go, a small hatchback that is based on the Nissan March/Renault Pulse.

“The return of Datsun to South Africa is integral to our expansion in high-growth markets where there are increasing numbers of upwardly-mobile people. Today’s launch marks the return of this legendary brand to the market place. 2014 will be the year we realize our goal making Datsun a reality for many customers across India, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa,” said Vincent Cobee, Global Head of Datsun.

According to Nissan, more than 20 million Datsuns were sold around the world over the course of 20th century. It was also the top selling brand in South Africa between 1976 and 1978.
