BMW Group sales were a record 177,741 in May taking year-to-date sales to 826,865, up 7.4% on year-ago levels and also a record for the first five months.

May sales were up 6.8% on the same month last year and sales chief Ian Robertson said the company is “well on track to sell over two million vehicles in 2014” adding that the USA showed solid growth while sales in Europe “are showing some signs of recovery.”

Sales of BMW brand vehicles rose 10% in May to 153,023; sales for the year-to-date climbed 10.9% to 722,129 boosted by sales of the new 2 Series, launched in March, which totalled 7,842.

MINI sales were down 12.4% at 103,158 for the year to date reflected the change to the all-new model. Sales in May were down 9.6% at 26,958. BMW says the decline was in line with expectations and customer interest in the new model is strong.

BMW and MINI sales in Asia were up 19.7% year-to-date to 264,094; in the USA sales grew 4.9% to 145,957 and in Europe year-to-date sales were up 2% at 351,997.
