The local agent for SsangYong is to commence SKD assembly of multiple models in Sri Lanka, the Korean manufacturer has announced.

According to a statement by SsangYong, and expanded upon to just-auto by a spokesperson for the firm, the models in question are the Korando, Acyton Sports, Rexton and Stavic. These are all being assembled at a plant owned by the Micro Car Limited, which has been the SsangYong importer since 2006.

Micro Car’s newly refurbished Polgahawela plant has an annual capacity of 14,600 vehicles but the company also assembles its own brand models, most of which are based on Geely small cars. As well as local sales, there are also exports to neighbouring markets.

Lawrence Perera, CEO of SsangYong Micro Cars said, “I believe that Micro Cars can increase SsangYong Motor’s share in the Sri Lankan market with this new facility. Also, we will strive to improve quality of the products and look forward to the successful launching of X100, the new type of SUV, by 2015 in Sri Lanka.”
