Ford of Britain says a new 140PS 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine boasts more power per litre than the 1001hp 8.0-litre quad turbocharged W16 in the Bugatti Veyron.
Interestingly, the UK importer’s media release points out this fact, which is missing from Ford of Europe’s announcement – the Cologne-based division’s communication centres on the colours of the limited edition cars in which the 140PS unit is debuting.
The new variants will be launched across Europe later this year in three-door form only. The Black Edition and Red Edition will have two-tone paint, special alloy rims, stiffer suspension, revised ratios for the five-speed manual gearbox, and modified power steering systems.
The 140PS engine joins existing 100PS and 125PS versions of this turbocharged three-cylinder unit. According to Ford of Britain, there are new settings for turbocharger boost control, valve-timings, intercooler and throttle management. No torque figure has been disclosed, nor has an image of the engine been released.
Performance figures are quoted as 0-62mph (100km/h) acceleration in 9sec and a top speed of 125mph. Fuel consumption of 62.8mpg and 104g CO2/km emissions are claimed.
