UK car production fell in May fell 9.8% year on year to 116,655 units due, the SMMT said, to days lost to spring shutdown at some plants.

Year to date output was up 3.5% to 654,895 cars.

The SMMT said demand for new cars in the EU continued to grow. Nonetheless,  export production fell 10% to 94,767 though YTD volume rose 4.7% to 519,572.

So far this year, 79.3% of output has been exported.

“UK car manufacturing fell 9.8% in May, as some plants instigated spring shutdowns during the month,” said SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes. “The prospects for the coming months and years, however, are still bright; new UK built models will benefit from growing demand across Europe while significant investments in UK manufacturing operations are moving closer to production readiness.”
