BMW plans to focus more on weight reduction than on increased power for its future M models.

According to The Motor Report, Carsten Pries, product planning chief of the M performance division, said: “We want to be in a different league for power-to-weight, but we prefer to have a car that weighs 1,000kg rather than one with 1,000 horsepower.”

The new M3 weighs about 80kg less than the previous version thanks to the use of carbon fibre and aluminium. The car has a turbocharged, three litre I6 engine developing 317kW (8kW higher than the previous model) and torque of 550Nm (150Nm higher). Due to lighter weight, fuel economy is also improved.

Both the new M3 and M4 can travel 0-100km/h in 4.1 seconds.
