When Kia Canada launched in the Canadian market in August 1999 expectations were high about public acceptance, dealer development and ultimately, vehicle sales. Well, on their one-year anniversary month, Kia has exceeded even their own expectations.
Not only are they exceeding their own expectations, but they are shattering all kinds of sales records along the way. In August Kia sold 1737 units (a 28% increase over the previous month) which brings the total year-to- date sales to a very competitive 7461 units.
And what’s more astounding is that 224 of those units represent sales of the latest Kia entry, the 2001 Rio, a stylish subcompact priced from under $12,000. “And we only started selling the Rio toward the end of the month” says John Wright, VP, Chief Operating Officer for Kia Canada Inc.

Reaction to the Rio has been very strong. With such a complete package; styling, reliability and value, the Rio is sure to generate interest as Canadians have already proven that they are very receptive to the value of Kia vehicles. Kia sells two other models, the compact Sephia, priced from under $14,000 and the 4×4 SUV, Sportage, priced from under $21,000.
Kia enjoys a coast to coast presence with dealers in every major market. And with a current 89 dealer count, any initial industry claims that Kia would have to work hard to attract dealers have been put completely to rest. To no surprise, Kia has a long list of potential dealers ready to come aboard.
Says Wright, “At this pace, we can’t wait to celebrate year 2,3,4,5…”
