Honda will recall nearly 250,000 vehicles worldwide, including sedans, minivans and SUVs, due to a problem with the stability assist system which could cause the vehicle to brake unexpectedly.

Models affected are the Acura RL sedan, MDX crossover and the Honda Pilot SUV sold in the US and other countries. In Japan, the recall will include the Legend sedan and three minivans – the Odyssey, Elysion and Stepwagon.

Most of the vehicles were made between 2004 and 2005 although Stepwagon models built between 2005 and 2006 are also affected.

Honda said the stability assist system in the vehicles may malfunction and the brake could operate even when the driver is not pressing the pedal. Vehicles may also brake more strongly than intended when the system malfunctions.

No accidents or injuries have been reported. About 183,500 Pilot, MDX and RL vehicles in the US are affected by the recall. There are 57,000 vehicles in Japan, including about 42,566 Odysseys.
