Ford –owned Land Rover has ordered a turn-key facility comprising 14 car body co-ordinate measuring machines (CMMs) from British manufacturer, LK in what is believed to be the largest CMM order ever placed in the UK. The machines will be used in the Solihull car factory for quality control of future Land Rover models.

The latest contract follows installation last year of four LK CNC car body measuring machines for inspecting current Land Rover models. Other companies within Ford Motor Company’s Premier Automotive Group also use LK CMMs.
Four of the new measuring machines, designated HC-90, will be integrated into the body-in-white production line. Off-line body-in-white inspection will benefit from the installation of HC-90 and LY-90 twin-column machines, as well as a quad-column version of the latter. The trim and final inspection activities will be enhanced by another LY-90 twin-column model.
Included in the order is the provision of Camio Studio 2, the new version of LK’s CAD-to-CMM software that allows inspection programs to be written (also contracted to LK) as soon as the relevant parts of the computer-aided design become available, well in advance of the first prototypes.
