Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia has launched the country’s first 100% electric-powered car and is looking at producing the batteries locally.

Mitsubishi Malaysia senior head project and chief executive officer Hoffen Teh told a local paper it is in talks with its parent company in Japan to appoint local vendors to manufacture the entire component of the lithium ion battery there to bring down the cost of the car.

“Right now, the battery comes together with the car from Japan,” said Teh at the launch of the i-MiEV.

The car sells for RM136,118.

Mitsubishi Malaysia aims to sell 50 in the year ending March 2014.

It plans local assembly once it achieves economies of scale by selling thousands of units a year.
