PSA Peugeot Citroen labour unions have voted to back plans to shut the Aulnay plant and axe thousands of jobs.

A majority of unions had already agreed to back the company plan which includes the closure of PSA’s Aulnay plant near Paris and the loss of around 8,000 jobs.

However, the cuts were delayed by a legal challenge filed by some dissident unions.

The Paris high court rejected the unions’ latest challenge on Friday, clearing the way for the cutbacks to take effect.

Union officials approved the key restructuring measures by 18 votes to two, an official from the CFTC union said after a works council meeting on Monday.

The automaker recently held the last of ten negotiations with its labour bodies to try and receive the green light to close its Aulnay plant and cut up to 8,000 jobs, with most unions edging towards acceptance. The plant has, however, been subject to protests and industrial action in recent months.

Loss-making PSA is struggling against Europe’s falling car market and low rates of capacity utilisation at its manufacturing plants.
