New Zealand’s new commercial vehicle registrations of 2,235 units was the best April result since 1982 when 2,754 were sold, according to the new vehicle trade group.

Newly appointed Motor Industry Association CEO David Crawford said commercial vehicle sales continued their strong upward trend last month with a 38% year on year increase over’s April 2012’s tally of 1,618.

Year to date, CV registrations are up 41% over 2012.

New passenger car sales of 5,908 vehicles in April were up 8.8% and are running 3.2% ahead of this point in 2012.

Crawford said: “This result shows the commercial vehicle market remains strong, and well up on the levels of sales [before] the global financial crisis. Commercial vehicle registrations continue to perform at levels last seen in the mid 1980s.” 

Toyota remained the market leader in New Zealand, taking 19.3% of total registrations with 1,477 units (918 cars and 559 CVs).  Ford was second overall with 944 registrations and General Motors’ Holden third with 748.

Holden was second in the passenger car segment with 588 registrations followed by Hyundai (542).

The top selling passenger car model for the month was the Suzuki Swift with 307 sales, followed by Toyota’s Corolla (287) sales, with the Mazda CX–5 and Toyota RAV 4 third equal (205).

The Ford Ranger was the top selling commercial (416) followed by the Toyota Hilux (360) and Nissan Navara (212).

SUVs were most popular in April, taking 27.7% of total registrations. Pickup/chassis cabs accounted for 19%.
