The Economic Times said that General Motors India (GMIL) is planning to launch two new models in 2003 as well as the Opel Vectra, which was launched, imported fully assembled from Germany, on Thursday.

According to the report, Aditya Vij, president and managing director, GM India said, “We are working on an additional platform apart from the multi-utility vehicle project that’s currently underway.”
The Economic Times said GMIL is working on a multi-purpose vehicle based on the Isuzu Panther for which the company will source engines from Hindustan Motors’ Pithampur plant and the new models will require capacity at the company’s Halol plant to be expanded from the current 12,500 a year on a single shift to 25,000 on double shift working and, eventually, 50,000.
The newspaper said that GMIL has no interest in picking up Daewoo Motor India’s Surajpur plant, though it may in future introduce new vehicles being developed by the combined GM-Daewoo entity in Korea.
GMIL is also looking at logistics and other synergies with its alliance partners Fiat India and Maruti Suzuki, the report added.
“We have done a logistics study with Fiat India and in the future could look at common logistic sourcing as a potential area of synergy,” Vij told the Economic Times.
The other area of synergy was as supplier. “If there is an opportunity and the alliance partner has the capacity, we would be interested in sourcing from them,” Vij said. Sourcing from Maruti’s aluminium foundry was also a possibility, the newspaper added.
