A new Magneti Marelli Automotive Lighting plant has been opened in Foshan, Guangdong province, in southern China.

The plant, which cost EUR30m, initially is making rear lights. Headlamps and electronic lighting components will follow.

Of the 26,500 sq m space, 17,800 is dedicated to production. In the first phase, about 2.4m rear lamps will be made a year by a workforce of 300.

While most production is for local and international companies in China, some will be exported to Japan. Initial production is for customers including Fiat, Ford and Nissan.

Magneti Marelli has been operating in China since 1996.
