New vehicle sales in Malaysia increased by 9.9% to 52,489 units in April, from 47,774 units a year earlier, according to data released by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

The country’s domestic economy remains strong despite weakening exports and commodity prices. Sales of passenger cars, SUVs and MPVs, which make up around 87% of the total market, increased by 10% to 45,564 units, while commercial vehicle sales increased by 9.2% to 6,925 units.

Cumulative sales for the first four months of the year were up by 12.8% at 210,153 units, compared with 186,318 units in the same period of last year. Light passenger vehicle sales were up by 12.8% to 185,253 units, while commercial vehicle sales rose by 12.9% to 24,900 units.
