Toyota plans to sell about 1.5m vehicles at home in Japan this year, about 50,000 more than previously planned due to demand for hybrids.
The latest Crown sedan, introduced at the end of last year, and the Aqua [Prius c] have sold well, the Nikkei reported. Orders continue to stream in for the recently redesigned Lexus IS and a hybrid Corolla [Auris] is due out in August.

Domestic sales reached 1.69m units in 2012 helped by subsidies for environmentally friendly cars. The subsidy programme ended last year and the economic outlook remains clouded but Toyota sees the new models helping sales pass the previous target.
The original goal of 1.4m units was upgraded to 1.45m with last month’s fiscal 2012 results. Exports to North America and emerging markets have also been solid, leading the company to upgrade domestic production plans for 2013 from the initial 3.1m vehicles.
