Porsche has assembled its 500,000th Cayenne at its Leipzig plant which began in 2002 with around 70 units a day. That has since quintupled and over 83,000 for customers in 125 countries were made in the last year.

Like around 2,500 customers a year, the owner of the milestone car collected his car from Leipzig personally, travelling from Austria to accept the white S diesel.

The plant has been a final assembly only facility – completing painted and trimmed bodies supplied from other factories and joining them to their powertrains – but Porsche is spending EUR500m to convert it into a full manufacturing unit with body assembly and paint shops in the largest construction project in the automaker’s history.

The new body shop is complete and the new paint shop will be commisioned this summer. Porsche said last March it had started trial body production for the upcoming new Macan small SUV and expected to complete its first fully manufactured vehicle by the end of this year.
