Fuji Heavy Industries, maker of Subaru, said it had received 5,580 orders for its first hybrid model, the XV Crosstrek, in the two weeks after it went on sale, about 10 times more than its monthly sales target of 550 units.
The company said it might have to increase hybrid production at its main factory in Ota, eastern Japan, this summer to meet the extra demand.
When the XV Crosstrek was unveiled at the New York show in April, Subaru said it expected the hybrid version would account for between 10-15% of sales.
