Western Europe sales fell 6.6% to 135,300 vehicles. Eastern Europe volume was off 9.6% to 19,000.

South America sales rose 12.7% to 76,300 vehicles. Other non-European markets also saw double-digit growth.

“The fact that markets for commercial vehicles have been shrinking due to the crisis-ridden economies in many European countries has had an impact on [our] vehicle sales,” the automaker said. “This is offset by gains made primarily in South America which did its part to balance out the weakness of the European markets.”

Describing the first half-year as having “proven gratifyingly stable”, sales and marketing head Bram Schot added: “We are aware that the European markets will be characterised by uncertainty again during the second half of the year. But we will tackle this challenge with confidence.”
