Ford has revealed the next Everest/Endeavour SUV at a special event in Sydney. Alan Mulally and Mark Fields were on hand to lift the covers off this seven-seat C segment SUV, which was developed in Australia.

The Everest, project U375, will replace the U268 series model. Like the current vehicle, the new one will be sold mainly in lower income markets in South Asia as well as in South Africa. Australia, a new destination for the next generation model, will be one exception to that rule. A spokesman for Ford of Britain told just-auto.com that there are no plans to sell the vehicle here.

The second generation Everest, a competitor for the next Chevrolet/Holden Captiva, will use Ford’s RWD/4WD body-on-frame T6 platform. This was introduced in 2011 by the Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50 pick-up twins.

The existing Everest, which is known as the Endeavour in some markets, is built or assembled at the following plants:

  • AutoAlliance, Rayong (Thailand)
  • Maraimalai Nagar, Chennai, Tamil Nadu (India)
  • Hanoi (Vietnam)

JMC, one of Ford’s partners, is believed to be developing a version of the U375 project for its Jiangling and Land Wind brands. Ford is yet to confirm this.

The current model (Endeavour in India) is based upon the former Mazda B-Series pick-up. Depending on the market, there are 2.5- and/or 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engines in combination with five-speed manual or automatic transmissions. Its debut was at the 2003 Bangkok show. Since then there have been three facelifts: November 2006, June 2007 and June 2009. The Indian-built Endeavour uses components imported from Thailand.

As well as revealing the new model, Ford Australia used the event to state that a right-hand drive version of the next Mustang will be sold locally. There was also a brief viewing of a facelift for the Falcon sedan. This is due to be released in the second half of 2014 and will be the long-lived big sedan’s last update. Ford will shut its local manufacturing operations in 2016.
