Koehler told Wirtschaftswoche newspaper that his company, whose main business is making graphite electrodes for electric arc furnaces that recycle scrap metal into steel, that the VW Group, through Audi and Lamborghini, as well as Porsche and General Motors, were all looking at using more carbon fibre.

“VW is banking on high volume use of carbon components,” said Koehler, while Porsche “is also very active.”

Despite the car industry’s growing interest in carbon fibre, it only represents 2% of SGL’s business, according to the company’s annual report.
