New vehicle sales in Malaysia rose by 15.1% to 68,431 units in July, from 59,459 units a year earlier, according to data released by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

Sales of passenger vehicles rose by 17.2% to 61,032 units, as consumers brought purchases forward ahead of the Hari Raya annual holidays. Consumers and businesses are also enjoying low interest rates and buoyant overall domestic sentiment.

Commercial vehicle sales were flat at 7,399 units in July, however. 

In the first seven months of 2013 new vehicle sales were up by 5.9% to 381,919 units, from 360,728 units a year earlier.

Sales in August are expected to be affected negatively by the long holidays and the forward buying by consumers.
