Volkswagen’s factory in Tennessee could become the first foreign run plant to have its workers officially represented by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, according to the German business daily Handelsblatt.

The newspaper quoted UAW chief Bob King as saying more than 50% of the employees at the plant, almost 2,500, had signed union cards and registered as future union members.

Volkswagen did not comment but human resources director Horst Neumann told the Reuters news agency after a meeting in Germany with IG Metall union: “I find it very depressing how deeply divided the country is on the issue of labour unions. Had they (UAW) been here to listen to the roundtable discussion they would have seen that we work together – it’s a model for success.” Neumann is a member of IG Metall.
