Following a simultaneous unveiling to the media in the US and Germany last week, Nissan now says the new Rogue and X-Trail twins will be built in as many as nine global plants.

While the X-Trail will not reach European markets until July 2014, Nissan North America has been quick to reveal that sales of its new Rogue will commence in the coming months. The 2014 Rogue is about to enter production at NNA’s Smyrna plant in Tennessee. The vehicle will come as standard in North American markets with a 170hp 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol unit and CVT. Both front- and all-wheel drive variants will be available and unlike the current shape model, seven-seater versions will be offered. As yet, there is no news on engines and transmissions for the X-Trail.

In July 2012, Renault revealed that Renault Samsung Motors would also build the Rogue replacement. Production at RSM’s Busan plant in South Korea is due to start in 2014. Annual capacity of 80,000 units has been reserved for the Rogue. The plant has capacity to build 300,000 vehicles a year.

In October 2012, South Korea’s steel major Posco said it would provide Renault Samsung with steel plates to be used for Nissan’s next generation Rogue SUV.

Nissan is yet to name the other plants that will build or assemble the X-Trail/Rogue but likely locations would be Kyushu (Japan), St Petersburg (Russia), Zhengzhou (China), Oragadam (India), and/or facilities in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

The new X-Trail/Rogue is the first model from Nissan Motor to use the company’s Common Module Family (CMF) architecture. CMF consists of four variable modules – engine compartment, cockpit, front underbody and rear underbody.

Renault issued a release to the media in June 2013 concerning CMF. This, the company stated, is an engineering architecture that covers Renault/Nissan Alliance vehicles, from one or more segments, based on the assembly of compatible Big Modules: engine bay, cockpit, front underbody, rear underbody and electrical/electronic architecture.

CMF for the compact and large car segments will include 1.6 million vehicles per year and 14 models (11 Renault group + 3 Nissan). Other vehicles to use CMF will be the second generation Qashqai, to be followed by replacements for the Renault Laguna, Espace/Grand Espace and Scénic/Grand Scénic/Scénic XMOD.
