Bermaz Motor, the authorised dealer for Mazda vehicles in Malaysia, aims to increase its total sales volume by about 16% to 8,000 units this year.

Managing director Datuk Ben Yeoh told local publication Business Times the target is driven by a high demand for CX-5 SUVs.

“We have received outstanding orders for the CX-5 and, as long as there’s no constraint in our volume production, there shouldn’t be any surplus in our product supply,” he said.

The company has sold more than 5,000 units of Mazda vehicles so far, Yeoh said at a CX-5 export ceremony held by Mazda Malaysia in Port Klang.

He said brisk sales of the CX-5, which accounts for about 25% of the brand’s total sales volume, are in line with the growing popularity of SUVs.

Mazda Malaysia, a 70-30 joint venture between Mazda Motor and Bermaz Motor, will export assembled CX-5s to Thailand.

The first batch, assembled at the Inokom assembly plant in Kulim, were shipped to Thailand via Port Klang’s Westports at the weekend.

“Thailand is the first of the markets in the Asean region for these Malaysian-assembled Mazda vehicles. We are still studying other potential markets in the region and will make Malaysia our hub for the region,” said Mazda Malaysia president Shakatani Shinji.

The CX-5 was introduced locally in the second half of last year.
