A potential problem with the gearshift ‘park’ position on Sienna minivans built in the US between 2004 and 2009 has led Toyota to issue a recall notice.

A lock that prevents the shift lever from moving out of the park position unless the brake is depressed can become damaged and Toyota is contacting customers so that it can be inspected and replaced.

The company said that there have been 21 minor incidents mostly involving damage to property and a couple of injury cases of minor bruising.

The majority of recalled vehicles, 615,000, are in the US with around 56,000 in Canada and 23,000 in Mexico. A few hundred are in Germany and Guatemala, the company said.
