New vehicle sales in mainland China expanded strongly in September, by 17.4% to 1,935,800 units, from a weak 1,617,400 units a year earlier, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).
Passenger vehicle sales, including cars, MPVs and SUVs, increased by 17.8% to 1,593,500 units, while commercial vehicle sales rose by 13.3% to 342,300 units.

Sales of Chinese brand passenger vehicles amounted to 608,600 units in September, up 8.3% year-on-year and accounting for 31.4% of total passenger cars.
Total vehicle sales in the first nine months of 2013 increased by 12.7% to 15,883,100 units, from 14,092,300 units a year earlier. Passenger vehicle sales rose by 14% to 12,849,300 units, while commercial vehicle sales increased by 7.5% to 3,033,800 units.
In the nine month period, sales of Chinese brand vehicles increased by 12.1% to 5,125,000 units, accounting for 32.3% of the total. Their share of the passenger vehicle market was much smaller, at 26.7% with 2,311,200 unit sales.
German-brand models accounted for 19.8% of the passenger vehicle total over the nine-month period; followed by Japanese with 15.4%; US 12.5%; South Korean 9% and French 3.1%.
