Authors of a report surrounding Nissan at its Canton, Mississippi plant have reacted angrily to the automaker’s response to the document.

Joint authors, Derrick Johnson and Professor Lance Compa, of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, issued their French language version of their report last week in Paris, which was backed by several French unions.

Nissan subsequently issued its own statement in which it said allegations had been made by the union and a few employees that plant management had ‘intimidated’ staff from joining the labour body.

“The Compa report repeats and is based entirely on these allegations,” said the statement. “The allegations are absolutely not true and have been refuted by other employees.”

However, both authors have themselves responded, noting: “Despite calling them ‘false allegations,’ Nissan does not identify a single factual error in our report.

“Nissan does not identify a single factual error in our report. Nissan does not deny management shows anti-union films, holds anti-union captive audience meetings and instructs supervisors to meet one-on-one with employees in a systematic campaign portraying unison as job-killers and plant-closers.”

In turn, Nissan told just-auto from the US: “Our statement stands [the] same. The company stands [by] its previous statement.

“That has addressed any of the allegations outlined in that report.”
