European Union antitrust regulators opened on Wednesday an investigation into aid given by Polish authorities to a project by Italy’s Fiat to make engines, saying this may have breached EU state aid rules.

“At this stage, the commission has doubts the aid meets the EU guidelines on aid to large investment projects in relation to the market shares and production capacities of the Fiat Group,” the European Commission said in a statement cited by Reuters.

The Polish support is for an investment project to be carried out by Fiat Powertrain Technologies Poland (FPT) in Bielsko-Biala, in southwest Poland.

Earlier, FPT announced its four millionth 1.3 16v MultiJet engine left the plant on 4 February. Production began in 2003.

The MultiJet is fitted on a large number of Fiat Group Automobiles models (and some GM Europe cars) and the milestone engine was destined for a 500 (also Polish made) for a French customer.

The engine is also produced in Ranjangaon in India.
