Iran Khodro is crediting the initial success of the Geneva nuclear talks between Iran and the West for a flurry of interest in the country’s automotive sector, that has seen a succession of companies beat a path to Tehran’s door.

The Swiss negotiations – aimed at lifting some sanctions against Iran in exchange for Tehran’s adherence to nuclear talks requirements – were led by the so-called P5+1 group consisting of the UK, US, France, Germany, Russia, China and the European Union, but already seem to have borne some early fruit.

It seems a battery of foreign television stations has expressed interest in Iran and in particular its vehicle industry – the second largest in the country after the oil and gas sectors – following the Geneva discussions – while last weekend’s automotive conference in Tehran has also stimulated business contacts.

“It changes after the Geneva agreement. We have some negotiations with European automakers and also Asian automakers,” an IKCO spokesman told just-auto from Tehran.

“After Geneva there is not something written – there is a general agreement but after that it needs to go into detail. But the negotiations compare everything for different parts of the industry of Iran – to welcome new players in different sectors.”

The recent conference, featuring 170 delegates from 20 countries, also saw Iran Khodro hold discussions with Renault and Peugeot, historically two key players in the country, while French suppliers association, FIEV, vice president Arnaud de David de Beauregard also attended the event.
