Fiat has outlined its plans to relaunch its Officine Automobilistiche Grugliasco, formerly Corrozzeria Bertone, operation to trade unions.

The plan centres around a EUR500m (US$677m) investment to begin in the second half of 2011 for production of a new E-segment Maserati for international distribution.

Start of production is planned for December 2012 and once fully operational, the plant will produce up to 50,000 cars per year with a progressive return to full use of the workforce.

Maserati’s plant in Modena will continue its existing production activities.

However, Fiat underlined that a prerequisite for the success of the project was the guarantee of maximum plant capacity and operational flexibility, supported by what it referred to as “a clear and firm commitment from the trade unions.”

Fiat said it would start discussions as soon as possible to agree the
conditions necessary to begin the project.
