Honda Motor has announced a major recall across the ASEAN region due to defective engine valve springs, as part of a global campaign involving close to 700,000 recalls. The models affected are the City, Jazz and Freed fitted with 1.5-litre engines and produced in 2009 and 2010.

This latest recall follows a global recall of 1.35m Honda cars announced last December.

Thailand is the main production location in the region for the City model while the Freed is made in Indonesia. The Jazz (aka Fit) is produced in both countries. Honda cars are also assembled in Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam and are sold also in the smaller ASEAN markets.

Honda Motor (Thailand) said it was recalling 90,000 cars yesterday, while PT Honda Prospect Honda Motor in Indonesia said it would announce its decision later. The City was also recalled in Indonesia in 2010 due to engine problems. Honda said that around 220,000 cars are being recalled mainly in southeast Asia.
