BMW executives talking to just-auto on the sidelines of the Indian Mini launch were upbeat.

“Despite the tough year, BMW finished 2011 with 9,371 units. Our share of the luxury market was merely 6% in 2006 but reached almost 44% by end of 2011,” Andreas Schaaf, president, BMW Group India, said with satisfaction.

On top of introducing Mini to India for the first time, Schaaf also launched BMW’s M5 here – it is imported complete rather than assembled in the automaker’s local plant.

“The market conditions toughened by the end of 2011 but we are optimistic about growth.

“We grew sales over 40% last year and hope for 20-30% in 2012.”

BMW India will launch the redesigned, locally assembled 3 series mid-year. It also plans to boost its dealer tally from 24 now to 40 by mid-2013.
