Chrysler said it would add 1,100 jobs at its Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit (JNAP), as it expands the Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup to include a diesel version for North America.

A new third shift of approximately 1,100 jobs at JNAP, which also makes the Dodge Durango, will be part of an operating pattern called the 3-2-120 schedule which allows each employee an additional 49 days off per year while enabling the plant an additional 49 days of annual production.

Current employment at the plant is approximately 2,890.

Last month Chrysler said it would re-pen the Conner Avenue assembly plant to produce the next Viper, adding about 150 jobs.

Employees start training and orientation next autumn.
