More on Daihatsu Motor’s plans to build a new assembly plant in Indonesia to meet fast-rising demand for new vehicles across South-East Asia. Vehicle sales in Indonesia rose by over 57% to a record 765,000 units in 2010, while sales in the ASEAN region were up by 32% to 2.5m units.
The new plant will be built in Karawang, around 60km east of Jakarta – close to Toyota’s existing plant which make the Innova and Fortuner passenger vehicles. The new plant will have an initial production capacity of 100,000 units per year and will begin operations in late 2012. It will directly employ 1,400 people and additional jobs will be created within its component supplier and services network.

Daihatsu already has the largest vehicle assembly plant, in Jakarta’s congested Sunter district, which produced close to 315,000 built-up vehicles last year – with considerable use of overtime. The plant makes small and compact vehicles sold under the Toyota and Daihatsu badges. The new plant is expected to produce small cars for the ASEAN markets.
