Car market leader Maruti Suzuki India has sold 10m vehicles, claiming to be the only automobile company in the country to achieve the milestone.

The company, which had rolled out its first car in December 1983, reached 5m domestic sales in February 2006. The tally doubled in just six years, Maruti noted.

The 10 millionth vehicle, a red Swift, was dispatched to Coimbatore from the company’s Manesar plant.

While the Maruti 800 and Omni powered sales for almost two decades, the Alto has been India’s best-selling car for over seven years. In recent years, the success of WagonR and Swift, among others, has accelerated progress towards the 10m mark.

Shinzo Nakanishi, Managing Director and CEO, said: “Maruti Suzuki’s success story is closely linked with the success story of India in the last two decades. Even as India has grown and transformed, [the automaker] has evolved to meet changing demands. We will continue to drive the growth and evolution of India’s car market.”

Maruti has launched a special edition white SX4 model with added trim and equipment to mark the milestone.
