Nissan North America’s Smyrna plant has started building the Infiniti JX, a large crossover that is also the first luxury vehicle to be built in Tennessee.

NNA claims that Smyrna’s headcount could rise from the present 3,500 to almost 6,000 workers by this time next year. The facility is due to add the next generation Nissan Pathfinder SUV later in 2012.

After the new Pathfinder arrives for North America’s 2013 model year, production of the Nissan Leaf as well as its battery packs will commence at Smyrna during the first quarter of 2013. The latter will be assembled in an adjacent facility that is presently under construction.

As well as being the only facility to manufacture the new JX, the 29-year old Smyrna plant also builds the Nissan Altima sedan and coupe, Maxima sedan, Xterra SUV, Pathfinder SUV, plus the Frontier pick-up and its Suzuki Equator twin.
