Toyota will conduct a full-scale feasibility study to begin passenger car production in Russia, Dow Jones Newswires reported, citing a Kyodo News report on Thursday.

The report said Toyota chairman Hiroshi Okuda will visit several locations in western Russia in early October to check related facilities and hold talks with local people concerned.
Sources reportedly told Kyodo News that Toyota has a number of production plans for Russia, including one to turn out tens of thousands of the Corolla small passenger car and the Land Cruiser sport-utility vehicle every year, Dow Jones said.
Toyota set up a sales unit in Moscow in 2001 and sold some 80,000 vehicles in Russia last year – overall sales in the country total about 1.2 million vehicles a year, the report added.
Dow Jones said Toyota earlier planned to launch the production of commercial vehicles in Russia in 1999 but shelved the plan as a result of the country’s economic crisis and political instability.
