Figures released by the SMMT show that car output was up by 15.1% in February led by strong exports.
Car production was up 15.1% on last year to 111,983 in February with exports up by 32% to 93,048 units. In the first two months of the year, car production is up by 12% on year-ago levels to 222,178 units.
However, production for the home market has fallen this year. In the first two months it stood at 35,051 units, some 36% down on last year’s pace.
“UK vehicle and engine production continue to lead a manufacturing recovery,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive.
“A 27% increase in export demand [for all vehicles] highlights the strength and competitiveness of UK products. Next week’s Budget will be crucial in creating the conditions for further investment in skills, R&D and capital equipment, all essential for growth and maintaining global competitiveness.”
