One of the longer-serving US model nameplates – Chevrolet’s Impala – has had a complete and very stylish makeover unveiled in New York. Styling no longer screams ‘police and feds’ car’ and GM plans to attract more private buyers this time around; the outgoing model was about 70% fleet.

GM said the new Impala “completes the transformation of its North American passenger car lineup”.

The 10th generation Impala goes on sale early in 2013. The old model was America’s best-selling full-size sedan in 2011 with sales of over 171,000.

Three direct-injected engines will be offered: a 3.6-litre V6, new 2.5-litre four cylinder and a 2.4-litre I4 with eAssist.

Ten airbags will be standard, along with OnStar, and options will include full-speed-range adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation braking, forward collision alert, lane departure warning, side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, rear camera and rear-park assist.

There will be three trim levels – LS, LT and LTZ and the model will be assembled at Detroit-Hamtramck, Michigan, and Oshawa, Ontario.
