A design study that previews styling elements of three forthcoming DS series models is to be revealed by Citroen at the Beijing motor show.

The Numéro 9 is the latest in a series of large concept cars, each of which has hinted at a possible replacement for the existing Citroen C6, the brand’s slow-selling seven-year old flagship model. Another effort was the Metropolis, an enormous yet elegant concept which Citroen displayed in France’s pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai between May and October 2010.

In revealing images and initial information about the Numéro 9, Citroen says that the concept will be the inspiration for three new DS vehicles: a C-segment premium sedan, an SUV and a D-segment executive saloon.

The Numéro 9 is a plug-in petrol-electric hybrid. The front wheels are powered by a 225hp turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, with a 70hp electric motor sending drive to the rear axle. The vehicle is said to have a range of 50km range running on its batteries alone.

While purely speculative, sources continue to suggest that a new luxury model is likely to be built in China at the forthcoming Changan PSA (CAPSA) joint venture plant being set up by PSA and Changan Automobile. This JV is separate to PSA’s existing venture with Dongfeng Motor and should centre on both upscale models for the DS series cars as well as light commercials.
