Toyota Australia is to “adjust” vehicle production at its Altona manufacturing plant in Victoria “to manage available parts supply following last month’s Japan earthquake and tsunami”.
That means halving out of Camry and Aurion (Camry V6) models in May and likely June. About 9,600 units will be produced in the two months for both domestic and export markets.
“From 9 May manufacturing plant team members will work half day shifts involving vehicle production and where possible training and plant improvement activities,” Toyota said.
Local media said the 3,300 staff would be paid 75% of their normal wages for such work.
The production outlook for July will be confirmed in June.
Manufacturing chief Chris Harrod said: “It is important to note that this is a necessary response to a short term supply issue and we intend to resume 100% vehicle production as quickly as possible.
