Seat, VW’s Spanish automobile brand, sold 25,796 cars in the first four months of 2011, taking the lead in Spain which has traditionally been dominated by Renault or PSA-Peugeot Citroen.

According to an official, Seat’s sporty Ibiza model line saw the lowest sales decrease in the country, according to manufacturer and dealer associations Anfac and Ganvam.

Overall, April sales fell 18% year on year to 3,096 and 32% to 11,128 units for the first four months.

The Opel Corsa, VW Golf, Renault Megane and Peugeot 207 respectively saw the other lowest declines.

The data contrasted markedly against overall car sales in Spain which fell 26.3% to 71,808 cars in April and could decline further as the country remains mired in deep recession. Indeed, some observers expect sales will total 860,000 units this year, down from a previous 900,000-unit forecast.

Seat said its [previous generation Audi A4-based] Exeo and Alahambra [minivan line shared with parent VW] models also performed well during the four-month period with sales up 11% and 77.6% respectively.

In a statement, Seat’s Spain general manager Vicente Adrian said: “These results consolidate Seat’s lead in the Spanish market, thanks to a well diversified, complete and balanced ranged and a local sales team that’s doing things very well, especially in the corporate channel.”
