General Motors said it had started a detailed evaluation of its transmission factory in the eastern French city of Strasbourg with a view to a possible sale.
The company said in a statement: “GM is committed to exploring internal and external options to identify potential viable alternatives and solutions to secure the future of the complex.”

The plant employs 1,000 people and last year produced around 280,000 six-speed automatic transmissions.
It is not known whether the evaluation was sparked by GM’s recently announced tie-up with PSA Peugeot Citroen. The US carmaker has since taken a 7% stake in the company, becoming the second largest shareholder after the Peugeot family.
The companies plan work jointly on purchasing and share platforms but would continue to market their vehicles independently and competitively.
