Toyota Motor plans to expand power generation capacity at its plants in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, in a bid to cope with possible electricity shortages this summer, company sources have said.
The automaker expects the move to lift the electricity self-sufficiency rate at the plants to 30% from the current 20%, Jiji Press reported.

Starting in July, Toyota will install eight cogeneration systems at plants in the prefecture. These include Motomachi and Tsutsumi, both in Toyota City, near Nagoya.
Affiliated company Denso produces up to 40% of its own electricity and Toyota Industries up to 35%.
Power companies in Japan have struggled to meet peak season demand since the Fuskushima nuclear plant was destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami in March, 2011.
