Indian carmakers, following on the footsteps of other international car markets, are set to devise a common recall code that will come into effect from 1 July 2012.
Faced with increasing recall issues, Indian auto makers hope to ensure that all car manufacturers in the country follow strict quality guidelines to guarantee better safety standards. This would ensure better quality products from carmakers, according to a Car Trade report.

The new code would outline the procedure for dealing with engineering defects in vehicles and enhance the industry’s problem handling ability also. Members of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) have decided to devise a new recall system.
Major car markets like Europe, Japan and the US have existing recall regulations to deal with fault complaints. However, a lack of such code in India means that carmakers are not held accountable for defects in their products, unlike other markets where the government regulatory body supervises faults and recall issues and even imposes fines if a serious safety fault is found.
The new recall regulation is set to be introduced in India on 1 July 2012.
