New vehicle sales in the Philippines jumped by 25% to 13,697 units in June, according to data released by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc (CAMPI)  – putting some shine on an otherwise lacklustre first half performance.

CAMPI data no longer includes some key brands, such as Hyundai and Chevrolet, and some smaller volume-brands – which together account for around 15% of the market.

First half sales were up by just 4% at 72,874 units from 69,782 a year earlier, with stock shortages affecting sales of key brands such as Honda, Nissan and Toyota for most of the semester.

The association is now confident that its 9% growth target for this year will be met, with member sales rising to 154,000 units compared with 141,616 units in 2011. It is hoping that the forthcoming Philippine International Motor Show – to be held between 16-19 August at the World Trade Centre in Manila  – will give the market an extra lift.
