The fuel is plentiful – with big reserves in North America – and new technologies for extracting it (fracking) at low cost appear to be successful. It promises to be much cheaper than oil for transportation applications and produces less CO2 than gasoline (estimated at around 25% less). 

Several large utility company fleets in North America are switching or considering switching their vehicles to run on CNG.
