Honda will start leasing electric versions of its Fit [Jazz] subcompact to municipal governments and companies in Japan at the end of August.

The carmaker said the Fit EV has a range of 225km, the longest distance recorded by a Japanese-made electric vehicle, surpassing Nissan’s Leaf which can travel up to 200km on a full charge.

However Honda has stopped short of leasing the Fit EV to consumers because it says the recharging infrastructure is not fully prepared in Japan. In the United States, Honda began leasing the Fit EV to customers last week for US$389 a month.
