Japan’s eight leading automakers boosted domestic production 21.2% to 847,734 vehicles in June.

The year on year increase slowed considerably from May’s 60.8% as domestic auto production in June 2011 began to stage a recovery from disruptions in the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in March the same year, industry officials told Kyodo News.

Toyota Motor output was up almost 25% to 311,672 units, the 11 consecutive month of growth.

Honda domestic production more than doubled to 92,021 units due to brisk sales of its N Box minivehicle. Daihatsu set a new output high for June on strong demand for minicars, while Fuji Heavy Industries [Subaru] marked a 68.0% gain.

But Nissan Motor reported a 2.5% drop in production to 99,800 units due to a model changeover of its Note compact car. Mitsubishi Motors saw a 22.6% output fall under the weight of the yen’s appreciation and slowed sales in Europe.

All but Mazda saw increased overseas production with Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Suzuki setting new highs for June.

Exports decreased at Nissan, Suzuki, Daihatsu, Mazda and Mitsubishi.

Combined production by the eight automakers in the January to June period increased 53% to 4,987,886 units.
